Dan and any other modem users, I have a question. I wonder what some good tweaks are for improving your internet connection. I use a US Robotics Performance Pro modem (56k hardware), and I also ensured that all of the compression options have been selected. I also made sure that the port to the modem is at the fastest line speed. 112500...I think it is that. So I am wondering if there is a way to squeeze a bit more out of it. I did search online, and I am pretty sure I have the latest drivers.

Another question. Does anyone use multilink PPP or shotgun technology to get around 100k connections? My fear with that is it's more like 2x50k than 100k, if you catch my drift. Does this improve performance?

How about reducing ping times in games like Counterstrike or Q3A? I'm getting between 200 and 250 in ping time. Is there a way to get it below 200? Even 175 would be an awesome modem ping.

Please let me know any tips you have.

Hate to tell you, but from the range you quoted in PC Gaming ("49.3kbps and 50.7kbps connections"), you're way ahead of the game, and anything impeding your connection from being faster is probably in either the phone lines or your ISP.
Basically, it ain't broke, so why are you trying to fix it.

I used to be able to get connections ranging from 52,000 to 54,666, but I understood that these connections are the exception and not the rule. After I moved, 50,666 and 52,000 were the fastest I saw.

Don't feel bad. You're doing fine.

It's not.
It's difficult to get working with ISPs since, in most iterations, it requires two consecutive modems in the modem pool on the RAS server.
For example, if your ISP has 50 modems connected to the POP where you dial in, numbered 1-50, and the first modem connects to modem #23, the second modem must connect to modem #24 or the multilink connection will fail. Multilink is good if you're dialing into a modem pool that doesn't see too much traffic (ie, a corporate LAN that needs RAS access).
Multilink was not designed for ISP usage.

Yeah, I understand. From what I read, it seemed like it was more trouble than it's worth. I figure that I just have to deal for a tad longer, anyway.
